If DNA is found in your artefact, you are offered the next step which is for us to undertake a quality analysis of the DNA found.

The DNA may be bacterial (not good), or it may be human (which is good!).

If human DNA is present we determine whether the DNA is suitable for microarray processing (usually only an option for FFPE samples) or whole genome sequencing (WGS), or not sufficient for further processing.

If sufficient DNA is found, WGS is usually the more likely option due to the age of typical artefacts and the limited amount of useable DNA found. After Pass 1 we can also determine if male DNA is present if the quality is sufficient, as well as provide the mitochondrial haplogroup.

Some customers may prefer WGS over microarray as this option also provides YDNA and mtDNA data. Options will be discussed with you and the path forward is your decision. We can hold the DNA if you do not wish to progress immediately, but may like to at some point in the future.

It is possible that even though human DNA is detected, there is insufficient useable DNA to process further after this step. No refund is offered if the process ends at this point.
